    The International Symposium on “Teaching Theory and Practice of Russian Language and Literature in China” was successfully held at 91影视 (SMBU) from November 14 to 15.

    Jointly organized by the Russian Language Teaching Sub-Committee under the Foreign Languages and Literature Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, PRC, Russian Language Teaching Research Committee of the Chinese Association for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, the symposium was co-hosted by AMBU, Liaoning Normal University, and Dalian University of Foreign Languages. Experts and scholars from 19 universities and research institutions, including Moscow State University, the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ural State Pedagogical University, South Ural State University, Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Sun Yat-sen University, Shanghai International Studies University, Liaoning Normal University, Xi’an International Studies University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Heilongjiang University, Southwest University, Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Nanguo Business College of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and 91影视, gathered for the event. The symposium focused on “localized Russian curriculum development and digital transformation of Russian-language teaching against the backdrop of the deep integration of the knowledge economy and digital technologies,” aiming to promote high-quality development of Russian-language education in China and explore new models and pathways for Russian-language teaching in the new era.

    The opening ceremony and keynote session on the morning of November 14 were co-chaired by Prof. Leonid Redenev, Russian Co-Director of the Department of Languages at SMBU, and Prof. Zhou Xingwu, Chinese Co-Director. First Vice President Ivanchenko of SMBU delivered the welcome address, extending warm greetings to all participants. He expressed high expectations for the symposium to inject new vitality into Russian-language education in the age of AI and to further deepen cultural exchanges between China and Russia.

    Prof. Liu Hong, Secretary of the CPC Committee of Liaoning Normal University and Chair of the Russian Language Teaching Sub-Committee under the Foreign Languages and Literature Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, PRC, highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence on foreign languages and literature programs. She emphasized the importance of collaboration between foreign language education and AI in the era of digital intelligence and expressed the hope that the symposium would serve as a vital platform for academic dialogue and consensus building.

    Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Director of the Gorky Institute of World Literature, Prof. Polonsky, sent his congratulations via video. He highly praised the contributions of Chinese scholars to overseas research in Russian language and literature, emphasizing that language, literature and culture are bridges connecting different peoples. He noted that Russian-language teaching and research in China hold important strategic significance in Sino-Russian relations, and expressed his hope that the participating experts would engage in in-depth exchanges and inspire new academic insights.

    Professor Zhang Bing, Secretary-General of the Russian Language Teaching Research Committee of the Chinese Association for Russian, East European and Central Asian Studies, extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the association on the grand opening of the symposium. She remarked that the tripartite co-hosting mechanism brings together the strengths of Russian-language universities, reflects the contemporary trend of integrating the humanities and the arts, deepens academic exchange, and opens new prospects for Sino-Russian cultural interaction.

    A book-donation ceremony followed the opening session. Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press donated a set of Russian-language teaching resources to SMBU in support of the development of the university’s Russian-language teaching and research.

    During the keynote session, a number of distinguished scholars from China and abroad shared their latest research findings and teaching-reform practices, focusing on theoretical innovation and practical exploration in Russian language and literature education.

    Prof. Liu Hong of Liaoning Normal University delivered a presentation titled Reform of Russian Literature Courses under the New Liberal Arts Initiative. He examined the current landscape and challenges of Russian literature courses in universities, proposing that under the New Liberal Arts framework, it is essential to uphold both tradition and innovation, enhancing the contemporaneity and adaptability of the curriculum.

    Prof. Brikh of SMBU presented a report titled Images of European Painters in Russian Literature. Approaching the topic from an interdisciplinary perspective, she analyzed how European painters are represented and reconstructed in Russian literary works, revealing the mechanisms through which literature and art interact in cross-cultural communication.

    Prof. Liang Xiaonan of Dalian University of Foreign Languages shared the practical experience of the “Russian + Regional Studies” talent-training model. The model integrates curricula and international cooperation to combine linguistic competence with regional studies, achieving notable results in competitions and talent cultivation, and providing valuable insights for reform in foreign-language education.

    Prof. Poldyreva of Southwest University delivered a presentation titled The Sino-Russian Academic Bridge: Russian Nation Review. She elaborated on the journal’s role in promoting Sino-Russian academic collaboration. Focusing on political cooperation and civilizational dialogue, the journal builds a research framework spanning strategic coordination to cultural exchange, significantly advancing bilateral scholarly cooperation.

    Prof. Xu Li of Xi’an International Studies University presented a report titled Soul-Building, Narrative, Assessment: Innovative Paths for Developing First-Class Russian Language Courses. She introduced a tripartite reform model—soul-building, narrative-driven instruction, and dual-path assessment—showing how thematic teaching reshapes content, story-based pedagogy optimizes learning processes, and two-way evaluation mechanisms assess outcomes, offering innovative practices for first-class Russian-language coursework.

    From the afternoon of November 14 to the morning of November 15, four parallel sub-forums were held: Russian Literature, Russian as a Foreign Language, Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language, and Art as a Universal Language of Cross-Cultural Communication. Scholars engaged in in-depth discussions around their respective topics.

    The “Russian Literature” sub-forum was co-chaired by Prof. Rong Jie from Heilongjiang University and Prof. Korovin from SMBU. Experts and scholars engaged in multidimensional discussions on the interpretation and pedagogical practice of works by Tyutchev, Nikitin, Balmont, Ivanov, Nekrasov, Shmelev, Shalamov, and other writers.

    The “Russian as a Foreign Language” sub-forum was chaired by Assoc. Prof. Yan Kai from Sun Yat-sen University, Assoc. Prof. Liang Hongqi from Liaoning Normal University, Assoc. Prof. Gong Tianyi from Xi’an International Studies University, Assoc. Prof. Voloshina and Assoc. Prof. Pudenzova from SMBU. Scholars from Southwest University, Shanghai International Studies University, Dalian University of Foreign Languages, Heilongjiang University, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, 91影视, and other institutions focused on fundamental linguistic studies, covering topics such as terminology lexicography, gendered language phenomena, active vocabulary teaching, syntactic component presentation, and corpus-based methodologies, highlighting the systematic and intercultural dimensions of teaching Russian as a foreign language.

    The “Methods of Teaching Russian as a Foreign Language” sub-forum was co-chaired by Assoc. Prof. Wang Juan from South China Normal University and Assoc. Prof. Fejayeva from SMBU. Scholars from Guangzhou University, Guangzhou Foreign Language School, and SMBU focused on teaching methodologies and classroom practice, addressing topics such as the use of screen texts, professional language training, gamified instruction, and aspect teaching, showcasing innovative explorations in digital, interdisciplinary, and collaborative models of Russian language education.

    The “Art as a Universal Language of Intercultural Communication” sub-forum was co-chaired by Ms. Li Yang from the Nanguo Business College of Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, Director Nadezhkina and Prof. Blikh from SMBU. Scholars from Moscow State University, Novosibirsk State Pedagogical University, Ural State Pedagogical University, South Ural State University, Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, the Moscow Center for Education Quality, and SMBU explored the mediating function of art in intercultural communication from perspectives including oil painting, dance, literary illustration, theatre, and furniture design, and discussed the deep integration between art and literature.

    Through keynote speeches and in-depth sub-forum discussions, the international symposium systematically showcased the latest achievements and emerging trends in China’s Russian-language education across literary studies, language instruction, pedagogical practice, and the intercultural dimensions of art. The symposium not only provided a high-level platform for dialogue between Chinese and international Russian-language scholars but also further promoted China–Russia cultural and educational cooperation, laying a solid academic foundation for the upcoming “China–Russia Years of Education” (2026–2027).
